The Pink Halloween Edit

The Pink Ghost Coffee Bar

I wanted Halloween in the kitchen without anything that would scare the kids at breakfast. So: pink ghosts with a BOO sign, flameless candles printed with pumpkins and bats, pink and white jack-o-lanterns, a big messy drape of pink creepy gauze and a flock of paper bats up the wall. It went up in one evening, the box is still half unpacked, and I have zero regrets.

Ghosts at the back, pumpkins up front

Start with height. Tall things go to the back, short things up front, and nothing sits in a straight line like a store shelf. In the basic shot on the wood sideboard you can see how it falls into place. The three flameless candles stand in the middle, the ghosts flank them on both sides, and the jack-o-lanterns sit low across the front.

There are two ghost sets. The set of five has the little pumpkin and BOO sign pieces, like the ghost holding the sign and the one in the witch hat. The set of three are plain sweet ghosts. Spread them out. Group the set of five toward one end and tuck the three in between the candles and pumpkins, so your eye keeps finding another one.

The carved jack-o-lanterns come in white, light pink and hot pink. Put the darkest one at an end of the arrangement. It anchors everything, and the white one keeps the middle from turning into one big pink blur. The candles with ghost, pumpkin and bat prints carry the black, so you do not need extra black anywhere.

The gauze is supposed to look messy

Pink creepy gauze is the cheapest way to make a counter look done. Do not try to make it neat. Pull it apart with your fingers, stretch it thin and let it puddle. In my kitchen I swagged it over the top of the upper cabinets and ran another piece along the counter under the ghosts so it drips off the edge.

On the styled sideboard the gauze runs down the front with fairy lights tucked into it. That looks great, but be smart about it. Gauze is thin fabric, so only battery LED lights go in it, never real candles, and keep it well away from the stove, the toaster and anything that gets hot. The candles in this set are flameless for exactly that reason.

Bats go up in a swoop

The pink and black 3D paper bats stick to the wall, and you fold the wings up so they look like they are flying out. Do not scatter them evenly. Start low near one corner of the counter and work up and out in a loose curve, mixing pink and black as you go. Fewer than you think looks better than a wall covered in bats.

Test one on your wall first, especially on fresh paint, and peel it off after a day to see if it lifts anything. In the lifestyle photo I'm sticking them on the backsplash above the sink, laughing, because half of them went up upside down on the first try and I did not notice until I stepped back.

What my kitchen really looked like

That photo is my actual kitchen mid setup. Dishes in the rack, mail on the fridge, the kids' drawings, an open box on the floor and me in fuzzy socks. The decor still works around all of it, which is the point. The ghosts and candles lined up at the back of the counter make that corner feel finished even when the rest is not.

The chippy sideboard, mugs, candy corn jar, cookies, coffee maker and fur throw in the styled shot are styling extras. You do not need a coffee bar to do this. Any counter corner, shelf or dresser top works. Start with the gauze and the candles, add the ghosts, and stop when the kids still say good morning instead of screaming.
