Pink Ballerina Halloween Costume You Can Rewear

A pink ballerina costume that does not live in a bin after October. The tutu is the fun part, but the wrap top, tights and satin flats are real wardrobe pieces. I wore it with leg warmers and an iced coffee, obviously.

Start with the wrap top, not the tutu

Everyone shops the tutu first. I get it, it is the fun part. But the long sleeve ballet wrap top is what makes this read grown-up ballerina instead of recital at age six. A plain camisole underneath is a good idea if the V runs deeper than you want.

Cropped, fitted, done. Check the size chart on the listing before you order, because wrap tops can run snug through the bust and you want it to land at your natural waist. Too long and it covers the waistband and the whole thing goes lumpy.

Tutu, tights and leg warmers do the costume part

The adult tulle tutu skirt has an elastic waist and enough layers to stand out on its own, no petticoat needed. Pinks shift a lot on a screen, so compare the tutu, tights and top colors on each listing before you order.

Do not skip the soft opaque ballet pink tights. Bare legs with a tutu looks like a dare. Opaque tights make it look on purpose and keep you warm when the trick-or-treat loop runs long. If you are between sizes, size up. Tights that are too short creep down and you will spend the night hiking them up in a hallway.

The ribbed leg warmers are my favorite piece. Push them down so they bunch at the ankle. That slouch is the whole look. Pulled up tight to the knee they read gym class. They also hide the spot where tights bag at the ankle, which is a small mercy. And yes, they are warm, which matters at a porch full of candy and a door that will not stay shut.

Satin flats and the coffee incident

The satin ballet flats have the ribbon detail and a little elastic strap across the top, which is the part that actually keeps them on your feet. Ballet style flats are thin soled, so they are great for a party and less great for a mile of sidewalk. Add a gel insole if you will be walking a lot.

Now the coffee. Satin does not forgive. Blot it with a damp cloth, do not rub, and let it dry flat. Lesson learned, lid on, every time. If you are going somewhere with drinks in red cups, consider a spray-on fabric protector the week before. Future you will be grateful.

Hair, makeup and wearing it all again

Keep the beauty simple. A slicked back bun, a pink lip and a little shimmer on the cheeks is plenty. If you want more ballet, wrap a ribbon around the bun.

After Halloween the tutu goes in a drawer, sure. Everything else keeps working. The wrap top goes over jeans or a slip skirt. The tights go under every winter dress you own. The leg warmers go over sneakers on errand days. If you already have a pink long sleeve top or plain pink flats, start there and only buy the tutu and tights.

Anything in the photos that is not on the shopping list above is a styling extra, so use what you already own.
