The Mushroom Book Nook

I have a rule about reading corners: if the light is ugly, nobody reads there. So this one starts with a purple mosaic mushroom lamp that glows like stained glass, then a pillow covered in mushrooms and stacked old books, a tiny library lantern that slides between the books on a shelf, and a string of red spotted mushroom lights. Four finds. The bookshelf, the quilt and the tea are whatever you already have.

Start with the lamp, because the lamp is the whole mood

The mosaic mushroom is the piece people ask about. It is hand-spliced purple and clear glass, about 7.5 inches tall and 7.5 inches wide, and it runs on batteries, so it can sit on a side table, a shelf or the floor next to you with no cord to hide.

It is smaller than it looks in photos, and that is a good thing. It is a glow, not a floor lamp. Put it at seat height, somewhere it lights the page and the wall behind it, and turn the big overhead light off. That is the trick to every cozy corner: low light, more than one source.

The pillow does the decorating for you

The pillow is 18 by 18 inches, lavender and plum, printed with mushrooms, wildflowers and stacks of worn books. It is the one piece that tells you what this corner is for before you sit down.

It is more than twice the height of the lamp, so let it lean against the back of a bench or chair and keep the lamp off to the side where it will not get knocked over. If your corner is already busy with pattern, this can be the only print in it.

Little lights for the shelf

The library lantern is a tiny black iron bracket with a hanging lantern that slides between books on a shelf, like the shelf has its own street lamp. It is small, palm-sized, and that is the charm of it. Tuck it between two taller books at eye level.

The mushroom string lights are 10 feet of fine wire with 30 little red and white spotted mushrooms, each about an inch long. Drape them along the edge of a shelf rather than wrapping them around everything. One loose line of light reads as cozy. Five reads as a party.

What is real and what is styling

The four finds are the lamp, the pillow, the lantern and the string lights. The bookshelf, books, quilt, tea, plants, rug and furniture in these photos are styling extras from around the house.
