Fall, But Make It Blue

I love fall. I do not love beige. So this is fall in blue and white, with just enough orange to make it obviously October. Jewel-tone velvet pumpkins, blue and white chinoiserie pumpkins, a ginger jar stuffed with orange bittersweet, a tea towel with tiny pumpkins on it and two porcelain votives. Six finds. The hutch, the copper and the plates are already in your house, or your grandmother's.

The ginger jar is the anchor

Everything here is built around one blue and white ginger jar. It is 8.25 inches tall with its lid, a real decor brand with more than a thousand reviews, and it stays out long after Thanksgiving.

For fall, take the lid off and fill it with the orange bittersweet stems. Each stem is 17 inches long, about twice the height of the jar, so they spill out instead of sitting stiff. That orange against the blue is the whole trick.

Two kinds of pumpkins

The velvet pumpkins come in navy, royal blue, dusty blue and aqua with curly gold stems, and the chinoiserie pumpkins are blue and white fabric with the same gold stems. Each one is about 4 to 6 inches across, smaller than the jar.

Group them at the base of the jar on a cutting board or tray, mixing the two sets so the velvet breaks up the pattern. Odd numbers, different heights, nothing in a line.

Small things that finish it

The tea towel is white waffle weave printed with three blue and white ginger jars holding topiaries and little orange pumpkins. Hang it on the hutch or the oven door where you will see it every day.

The votives are two blue and white porcelain tealight holders in two different floral patterns, about 2.75 inches tall, the smallest pieces here. Light them in front of the pumpkins and the whole corner glows.

What is real and what is styling

The six finds are the velvet pumpkins, the chinoiserie pumpkins, the ginger jar, the bittersweet stems, the tea towel and the votive holders. The hutch, plates, copper tray, pitcher, wildflowers, real pumpkins, leaves, linen, island, dog and tumbler in these photos are styling extras.
